The Paan Lab

The Paan Lab is an elevated paan experience, located in the elevator lobby of The Fred.

I wanted to use obvious elements and colors, but also put the text and mongram together in a way that wasn’t trying too hard, but still came together in an unexpected way.
Zain and I particulalry came to love the base color; it’s not quite terracotta nor the standard red-stain dye-like fluid that is associated with informal versions of paan. The globular (almost mitochondrial) shape in the logo mounted on the counter is probably what I’m most pleased about, and one more example of where a good creative mind to bounce an idea of right at the end - is so important.

Paan usually comes wrapped in a silver food-grade wrapper which is often waste/ left over from previous print jobs. It’s a specific kind of paper, and we even wrestled with things like bringing the GSM down to 110 from 140 based on feedback from the Paanmaster/ maker, citing ease of opening for customers.

The menu is based on an old school lab notebook, the sort I’d used in all my years of science and engineering studies. I still love the nostalgia of documenting everything in process.
